Position: Senior Auditor (Auditor 12)

The Local Audit and Finance Division (LAFD) plays a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and strong financial management across Michigan’s local governmental units. LAFD is responsible for developing and maintaining uniform accounting and reporting formats for counties, cities, townships, villages, and other governmental entities, and for conducting audits when statutory criteria are met.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, revision, and implementation of audit and accounting policies.
  • Create, update, and maintain audit guidance, accounting manuals, and standardized forms and instructions for use by Michigan local government units and their auditors.
  • Provide expert interpretation of audit and accounting standards as they apply to local government reporting.
  • Assist in shaping and enhancing internal policies and procedures to support the effectiveness and consistency of the Audit Section.
  • Contribute to advancing uniformity, compliance, and best practices across local governmental financial reporting statewide.
Qualifications

Preferred candidate: strong technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse stakeholders.

Education
  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in accounting.
  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester credits in one or a combination of finance, economics, information systems, business analytics, data analytics, statistics, quantitative methods, data science, or management may be substituted for the education requirement for agency positions responsible for internal auditing or Office of Auditor General positions.
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Information System Auditor (CISA) may be substituted for one year of experience at the P11 level for positions responsible for internal auditing.
  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA) may be substituted for six months of experience at the P11 level.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may be substituted for one year of Auditor experience.
Experience
  • Three years of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor, including one year equivalent to an Auditor P11.
Additional Requirements
  • Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside Michigan, you must relocate prior to appointment. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.
  • This position is eligible for remote work up to five days per week, with monthly in-person meetings at the Austin Building in Lansing. Selected candidate must have a safe and appropriate designated workspace with secure and sufficient internet access of commercial cable or wireless broadband with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Occasional onsite work will be required.
