Merritt Innovative Consulting & Advisory LLC (MICA) is a Houston‑based accounting consulting firm that helps small businesses and non‑profits take control of their finances. MICA provides fractional CFO and advisory services, bookkeeping, tax planning, cash flow management, strategic business coaching, and operational consulting.

The Director of Accounting is a working manager responsible for delivering accounting services to their own portfolio of clients and leading a small team to ensure timely, accurate service delivery across all client engagements.

• Manage a portfolio of client accounting engagements: bookkeeping, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and month‑end/year‑end closeouts.
• Prepare and deliver client financial statements and reports.
• Coordinate with external tax accountants on client filings.
• Lead software implementations and training for clients.
• Review and approve staff work (bookkeeping, financial statements, payroll, AP/AR reports) for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
• Supervise a team of 2‑3 direct reports, set expectations, conduct check‑ins, provide coaching, and coordinate across time zones.
• Track client deliverables and project timelines using the company’s project management system.
• Identify and resolve workflow bottlenecks; recommend process improvements.
• Handle escalated client concerns and provide support for complex situations.
• Maintain required Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours, stay current with regulations, software updates, and industry best practices.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required).
• 5‑7 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or team‑lead role.
• Strong knowledge of bookkeeping, reconciliations, financial statement preparation, payroll processing, and AP/AR management.
• Experience implementing or configuring accounting software (e.g., Quick Books Online).
• Demonstrated project‑management skills: managing multiple clients and projects while meeting deadlines.
• Exceptional organizational and attention‑to‑detail skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for client and team interactions.
• Proficiency with Quick Books Online; experience with payroll systems and project‑management tools preferred.
• Experience coordinating with remote team members across time zones.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for client site visits.

This is a hybrid position based in Houston, TX. Client site visits required ~3 days per week; remote work available for non‑client‑facing days. Flexible schedule with ability to set own hours within reason.
