Position: Field Auditor I - Wilmington

Position Title

Revenue Field Auditor I (NS) – Grade NC17 – Number

Overview

The North Carolina Department of Revenue seeks a Revenue Field Auditor I to conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers. The position is full‑time, permanent, based at the Wilmington Service Center with a hybrid remote work schedule and requires regular travel within an assigned territory.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent examinations of taxpayers’ financial records, identifying audit features and potential compliance issues.
  • Review and audit all tax schedules administered by the Department to ensure compliance with statutes and appropriate adjustments.
  • Maintain an audit plan, including selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing audit reports.
  • Select taxpayers that appear not to comply with state tax laws and where adjustments generate additional tax revenues.
  • Prepare and submit audit reports for timely review with minimum oversight from management.
  • Travel to taxpayer locations within assigned territory, including limited overnight travel; access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, accounting, or a related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Official or unofficial transcript required to verify completion of required accounting hours.
  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code, state tax laws across multiple schedules, and auditing and accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet and word‑processing software.
  • Strong analytical skills for investigating complex tax compliance issues.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Starting salary: $62,130 (range $62,130 – $106,544).
  • Hybrid remote work schedule;
