The office has business units covering general accounting, cash services, asset management, financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable, debt, and the university’s tax compliance. The University Controller’s Office works to advance NC State as a leader in fiscal accountability and responsibility through a partnership with our campus community, strong partnerships with our peer groups, improvements in the University’s financial systems and internal controls, and efficient and effective business operations.

The office continues its attention toward collaborative efforts and providing fiscal leadership, oversight, accounting, reporting, training, and outreach services that exemplify the highest standards of quality, performance, and service. The University Controller’s Office is responsible for fiscal accountability, accuracy, and reporting of the university with a net position of approximately $2.0 billion, including timely and accurate payment of monthly and biweekly wages to over 18,000 staff, faculty, student workers, and temporary employees, over 117,000 vendor payments annually, and management of a $550 million external debt portfolio.

Job Duties

The Capital Asset Accounting (CA) Manager reports to the Assistant University Controller and oversees the full lifecycle of approximately $2 billion in capital assets (over 17,000 assets) at NC State University. This role serves as the functional lead for the asset subsystem within the broader financial system and manages all related compliance programs. Additionally, the CA Manager leads data exchange interfaces and reporting between the University’s Financial Reporting function, the UNC System Office (UNC‑SO) Data Mart, and the North Carolina statewide Budget and Financials systems.

This position offers the opportunity to become a trusted advisor within the Controller’s Office, helping guide the stewardship of university resources while supporting institutional priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Direct year‑end financial activities related to construction in progress (CIP) and capital assets.
  • Lead asset‑related reporting and data exchanges with university, UNC System, and statewide financial systems.
  • Partner with Controller’s Office leadership on strategic initiatives, special projects, and key performance reporting.

Compliance, Regulation & Policy Analysis

  • Ensure compliance with GASB standards, UNC System requirements, Office of the State Controller regulations, university policies, and state statutes.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in accounting standards and legislation, translating requirements into effective business practices.
  • Represent the Controller’s Office on university committees and campus initiatives.

Capital Asset Operations

  • Oversee the complete capital asset lifecycle, including capitalization, inventory management, transfers, disposals, and surplus activities.
