Job Summary
Reporting to the System CFO, the System Director of Financial Reporting is responsible for leading the organization's financial reporting, consolidation, and accounting functions. This role ensures the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, regulatory filings, budgeting reports, and statistical analyses. The Director collaborates with hospital and health system leadership, external auditors, and finance teams to maintain compliance with accounting standards and healthcare regulations while supporting strategic decision-making.
She/he must be a tactical thinker and be able to implement policies, controls, practices and reports that are consistent with acceptable accounting standards and reflect leading practices within the health care industry.
- Direct the organization’s consolidating accounting and budgeting functions.
- Direct and supervise financial reporting.
- Responsible for overseeing preparation of monthly consolidated financial reports.
- Implement and supervise the preparation of financial and statistical reports.
- Communicate with the system-wide financial staff, on a regular basis.
- Establish and maintain the organization’s accounting policies and processes in accordance with GAAP and healthcare industry standards.
- Prepare System office Form 990 and tax return process, along with other required state and federal returns.
- Coordinate 990 and year end tax return process for all system entities.
- Collaborate with Mission Integration in measuring community benefit provided.
- Interface with internal and external auditors.
- Maintains a system of effective internal controls.
- Provide technical support on accounting standards to Ministries and provide oversight of consistency in adherence to accounting standards.
- Oversees, with the System Director of Revenue Operations, the analysis for contractual adjustments and bad debts on a monthly and annual basis for the health system.
- Ensures the proper valuation of the health system’s receivables on the balance sheet including establishment of appropriate reserve requirements for third-party PIPs and allowances.
- Interacts with external auditors regarding analytics and questions associated with accounts receivable valuation.
- Analyses and reports on net patient revenue variances from budget.
- Reviews the completed filings for the hospitals, PACs, FQHC, and home office cost reports for CMS and Medicaid as required.
- Oversees the collection and compilation of information for inclusion in the filings being sensitive to methods and data which optimize reimbursement following the regulations.
- Assists in the planning and coordination of audits by third-party agencies. Serves as a liaison between the system and the regulatory agency’s fiscal intermediaries.
- Serve as primary point of contact for philanthropic foundation accounting.
- Partner in collaborating on accounting matters with system functions and hospitals as assigned.
- Abides by the Standards of Conduct which is the basis for the Organizational Integrity Program.
- Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Systems and the Catholic Health Ministry.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA strongly preferred; MBA desirable.
- A minimum of 5 years progressive healthcare finance and accounting experience.
- Experience with financial consolidations, audit management, and health-system reporting.
- Advanced Excel and financial systems expertise
- Excellent leadership, communication and analytical skills.
- Knowledge of consolidation accounting and 990 preparation.
