Tax Accountant

About the Role

J.R. Helms & Associates, P.C. is a full-service accounting, tax, and business consulting firm based in Indianapolis. We’re hiring a Tax Accountant with 4–8 years of tax experience who wants meaningful client work, professional growth, and a clear development path.

This role is ideal for someone who has hands-on tax prep experience and is ready to take ownership of their work while continuing to grow in a supportive, collaborative firm environment.

This role requires sound judgment, curiosity, and the ability to think through issues—not just follow a checklist.

• Prepare individual and business tax returns (1040, business & personal returns, Schedule C, etc.)
• Prepare and post journal entries
• Assist with month-end and year-end close
• Prepare financial statements
  , reconciliations, and supporting schedules
• Research and resolve account discrepancies
• Support audit fieldwork (operational and financial)
• Analyze financial and tax data to identify issues, research solutions, and apply sound judgment
• Communicate clearly with clients and internal team members to resolve questions and gather accurate information
• Apply critical thinking to complex or non-routine accounting and tax scenarios
• Document assumptions, research, and conclusions in a clear, professional manner

• 4–8 years of tax preparation or public accounting experience
• Experience preparing individual and business tax returns
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients and coworkers
• CPA license not required

• Detail-oriented with the ability to manage priorities and deadlines independently

Competitive salary range of $44,500–$81,000
, based on experience, with opportunities for growth, professional development, and performance-based increases.
