This position will be expected to work onsite in downtown Madison a minimum of 1 day per week with the opportunity of 4 days of remote work

As the Accountant in BFS, you will be responsible for performing professional accounting work in support of DHS in the Managerial Accounting Section. This position works primarily with Division of Medicaid Services. Work responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing critical data, analyzing and presenting information to management, and making recommendations for improving federal and other financial claims and reporting processes.
  • Preparing, processing, analyzing, maintaining financial records for grants including preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as specified by each federal grantor agency.
  • Reconciling cash balances, revenues, and expenditures to State and Federal agencies.
  • Assisting management with interpretation of financial reports, regulations, and other related data.
Salary Information

The starting pay is between $30.38 and $34.15 per hour (approximately between $63,200 and $71,000 per year) depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. This position is in pay schedule and range is 07/04.

An additional hourly add-on of up to $1.00 may be available for being a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

  • For positions that allow remote working flexibility, working outside of Wisconsin or in bordering cities will not be allowed except in extremely limited circumstances due to the need to report to an office location in Wisconsin on short notice.
  • Employees must have access to secure high-speed internet for remote work option. Mileage reimbursement to the employee’s headquarters location is not provided. Remote work flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.
  • DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I‑9 form upon hire. DHS is not an E‑Verify employer nor a STEM‑OPT eligible employer.
  • Education and/or equivalent experience in accounting meeting one of the following:
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college in accounting
    • Associate’s Degree in accounting and 2 years of equivalent work‑related accounting experience
    • 3 years of equivalent work‑related accounting experience (e.g., managerial/cost accounting, fiscal report analysis, auditing, etc.).
  • Experience using computer programs such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access to organize, manage, and analyze data.

Well‑qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:

  • Experience or training using financial software such as People Soft to create fiscal reports, process fiscal transactions, prepare financial statements and federal grant reports, etc.
  • Advanced experience or training using Excel tools for data analysis (e.g., creation and maintenance of formulas; use and maintenance of Excel “link” functions; creation, maintenance, and use of pivot tables, etc.). An Excel test to determine level of proficiency will be required.
