Position Summary:
As a full-time Senior NAAS Advisor at Haefele Flanagan, you will serve as a trusted resource for complex nonprofit clients, lead key engagements, review work prepared by others, and provide technical guidance on nonprofit accounting matters. Successful candidates must be highly motivated with strong technical expertise, excellent analytical and business writing skills, and the ability to think critically, collaborate effectively and build strong client relationships.
The role can be fully remote, except for at least twice annually when presence at the New Jersey office is required.
- Serve as in-charge accountant on selected complex engagements - includes serving as primary point of contact for client questions; requires understanding of client operations, interpersonal dynamics, and mission
- Assist clients with budget preparation, audit prep, grant reports, compliance advice, internal controls, etc. as needed
- Prepare and review interim and year-end close work papers which support conclusions both quantitatively and qualitatively
- Prepare and review tax returns (Form 990 series), reflecting thorough knowledge of the applicable compliance requirements
- Respond to questions from clients about a variety of nonprofit accounting topics, such as:
Regulatory and GAAP treatment of complex transactions, Functional expense accounting, Grant reporting and compliance - Analyze financial trends and general ledger
- Review work of in-charge accountants and bookkeepers in the firm to ensure work is complete, accurate, properly performed and documented
- Collaborate with bookkeepers and other in-charge accountants in the firm
- Manage self-administration tasks such as time entry
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Background
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field (required)
- CPA license preferred (or actively pursuing)
- At least five years’ professional high-level accounting experience (public accounting background strongly preferred)
- Experience reviewing work papers (required)
- Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements (required)
- Experience preparing and reviewing Form 990 (required)
- Experience working with nonprofits (required)
- Knowledge or experience of EOS a plus
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for nonprofits
- Strong knowledge of Excel (5 years’ experience)
- Strong knowledge of Quick Books (3 years’ experience)
- Ability to analyze general ledger and financial trends
- Familiarity with operating environment of small and medium-sized nonprofits
- Superior business writing skills
- Superior accuracy and attention to detail
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Strong time management skills and ability to keep track of many tasks that require follow-up
- Ability to adapt to constant change
- Ability to self-motivate, work independently and as part a team
- Excellent organizational skills
