Job Description & How to Apply Below

Columbia Home Services (CHS) is a private equity‑backed platform actively investing in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other trade‑related service companies. We are searching for an experienced Assistant Controller to support the corporate finance and accounting function. The right candidate will also have the opportunity to assume larger roles across the growing platform. This position is a full‑time remote position.

In this position, you will play a pivotal part in CHS’s growth, reporting directly to the Corporate Controller and working closely with the CFO. The Assistant Controller will own the accounting function across a portfolio of 4‑6 operating company locations and the corporate business unit, working in close coordination with operating company managers, GMs, and the corporate finance team. The ideal candidate for this role possesses excellent problem‑solving skills, has a deep understanding of accounting principles, and is detail‑oriented.

You will be responsible for accurate and efficient accounting processes, month‑end close, and supporting the design and implementation of best practices across the platform.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Own the accounting and financial reporting for the corporate business unit and 4‑6 operating companies by performing all accounting, month‑end journal entries, month‑end reporting and analysis, and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Standardize the month‑end closing processes across the platform in support of a shared services financial close & reporting model: implement standard account reconciliations; ensure daily revenue and cash deposit processing is completed for the previous day’s activity at all operating companies; develop accounting consistency for intercompany, prepaid insurance, payroll and general accounting work streams.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls across the region — identifying risks, documenting procedures, and implementing improvements to protect business assets and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in the annual financial statement audit by preparing audit work papers and documents to fulfill PBC auditor requests for all operating company locations.
  • Support company‑wide accounts payable processing by refining the full utilization of A/P automation software system capabilities.
  • Manage the company‑wide insurance policy application and renewal process, and act as the primary point person to complete annual insurance audits.
  • Support the development, documentation, and implementation of company‑wide internal control policies and procedures.
  • Assist during the accounting integration process of newly acquired operating companies.
  • Complete special projects as requested by company leadership.
  • Possible travel to other company locations may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required. Relevant certifications such as CMA or CPA are preferred but not required.
  • 7+ years verifiable progressive accounting experience with an in‑depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 2+ years as an Assistant Controller or Senior Accountant in a PE‑backed or high‑growth environment.
  • Hands‑on experience with accounting software packages such as Sage Intacct and Quick Books. Exposure to Service Titan is a plus.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel, including the ability to create pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, nested "if" statements, and logic formulas. Intermediate skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams preferred.
  • Utilization of AI software to drive efficiency.
PERSONAL DIMENSIONS
  • Holds a desire to take on greater responsibilities and actively contribute to the company's growth.
  • High energy and a strong work ethic with the ability to balance tasks effectively and maintain a healthy work‑life balance.
  • Possesses problem‑solving skills and ability to apply proven solutions.
  • Is analytical and detail‑oriented with the ability to seek out and probe for information.
  • Works independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision and communicates essential feedback.
  • Capable of managing numerous assignments and a steady high volume of work to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate clearly with a broad cross section of personnel that includes corporate team leaders and operating company accounting, payroll and office staff.
  • Maintains a mature, professional, and upbeat attitude at work in making sound and prudent business decisions.
