This is a full-time Accountant role in a hybrid work arrangement, based in Wilmington, DE, with some work-from-home flexibility. The Accountant I is an entry-level accounting role responsible for assisting in the preparation of financial statements, reconciling accounts, and maintaining accurate financial records. This role supports various financial and regulatory reporting processes and serves as a backup for senior-level accounting functions.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare monthly expense analysis reports.
- Assist in the preparation of statutory Annual and Quarterly Statements.
- Support external auditors by providing documentation and explanations.
- Prepare and post standard journal entries; reconcile general ledger accounts monthly.
- Maintain and update the monthly financial file, including:
- Loss and premium data
- Budget and prior period data
- Additional financial elements as needed
- Monitor daily bank activity and prepare monthly cash flow reports.
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and reconcile credit card statements to general ledger accounts.
- Support the preparation of annual premium tax returns and electronic filings for
- Federal and State tax deposits.
- Work with unclaimed property vendor to file with various states; maintain and reconcile escheatable property analysis monthly.
- Maintain accurate records and organized documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
- Ensure confidentiality of all financial information and comply with internal reporting protocols.
- Serve as backup for Senior Accountant in areas including:
- Accounts Payable
- Investments
- Commissions
- Fixed asset software
- Collaborate with the Accounting Manager on:
- New analysis and reporting projects
- Enhancements to existing files
- Filtering and interpreting large datasets
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Accommodate an irregular work schedule and attend financial training workshops/seminars when necessary.
- Report any gifts or payments exceeding $50 annually from individuals or organizations affiliated with Farmers Mutual to the President.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- 0–2+ years of accounting experience
- Insurance industry experience preferred, but not required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, especially Excel
- Experience with financial/accounting software (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server) is a plus
