As an Apella Accounting Assistant, you will serve in a critical finance function supporting the accounting team, the finance department and the broader Apella organization. You will play an important, tactical operations role in maintaining accurate financial records, performing reconciliations, and supporting the team with various accounting tasks while developing procedures and policies to govern the operations of the department in the future.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a well-supported, high-trust, accounting role within a national, fee-only RIA. The ideal candidate will have experience with all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, financial and government reporting, and streamlining accounting processes.
You’ll be joining a team obsessed with client service – where good enough never is. You’ll be expected to identify and take charge of opportunities to improve team operations and efficiency from Day 1. Where you’ll work:This role will be located on our West Hartford, CT-based team and be expected to be available in-office daily for meetings with some remote work flexibility as determined by finance team leadership.
What you’ll be responsible for:- Prepare, analyze, and maintain financial reports, statements, and records in compliance with company policies and accounting standards
- Assist the accounting team with monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings and reconciliations
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of invoices, payments, and other financial transactions
- Review employee and company credit card expense reports for adherence to company policies and processing payments upon final approval
- Assist with payroll management, reporting and forecasting including executing payroll distributions
- Ensure timecard accuracy and completion, downloading reports and preparing journal entries for uploading into the general ledger
- Support accounts payable/receivable functions, ensuring all transactions are properly recorded and follow up on outstanding payments
- Assist with the preparation of tax filings, audits, and other regulatory compliance requirements
- Collaborate with internal teams to provide financial insights and support decision-making
- Associate’s degree in Accounting or a related field - Bachelor’s degree preferred
- 2+ years in an accounting or finance role - with a strong understanding of financial principles, finance team operations and accounting software
- Experience with payroll operations, financial analysis and reporting strongly preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, SAP, Oracle, Sage Intacct)
- Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) is a plus
- Exceptional critical thinking abilities and attention to detail
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong listening skills; professional demeanor
- Strong organizational, prioritization and project management skills
- Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Eager to learn and able to adapt quickly to multiple technology platforms and rapid change
