Job Title: Manager
Reports To: Senior Manager, Director, or Partner
Assigns To: Senior Associate, Associate, and Intern/Extended Intern
Status: P/T or F/T
CE Req: 40 continuing education per year
Travel: 0-15%
Assignment: Assigned Client and/or project responsibility with tactical focus; acts as Scheduling Partner

Position Summary

The Manager uses business and accounting acumen, in conjunction with the responsibilities outlined in the next section below, to:

  • Review and oversee U.S. federal and state motor fuels tax and sales and use tax return filings
  • Research issues surrounding tax registration, licensing, and filing requirements
  • Support the implementation of tax automation software that facilitates tax determination and tax return preparation and filing
  • Provide support to their supervisor(s) and contribute in a cooperative, respectful manner to enhance the work of others and promote a team environment

The Manager may bring experience in motor fuels tax, sales and use tax, or both. They will build on their existing strengths first, with opportunities to broaden across both tax types as client needs and their own interests develop.

Responsibilities
  • Preliminary or Final Tax Return Reviewer
  • Provides guidance to Senior Associate, Associate, and Intern/Extended Intern; is able to coach and develop team members
  • Has direct interface with Client(s) and is the initial point of contact for assigned project(s)
  • Knows what and where to find answers for completing research
  • Knows what to do when using Excel and is efficient; can reconcile to zero; can troubleshoot and reconcile differences
  • Reviews and approves and/or escalates solutions or next steps to resolve issues proposed by the Client Services Staff to the Senior Manager, Director, or Partner.
  • Able to complete technical writing activities with clarity and understanding; completes Preliminary tax technical review and is able to develop key points
  • Knows big tax types, has specific state knowledge and knows how to discuss tax technical aspects
  • Works with the Leadership Team to improve processes and policies that support the work environment and growth of the Firm
  • Identifies sales opportunities with existing Clients for assigned projects and works with the Leadership Team to pursue
  • Proficient in directing the activities of others using strong competencies in delegation, developing direct reports and others, directing others, informing, managing and measuring work; brings a high level of emotional intelligence
  • Attend industry conferences to maintain and nurture positive working relationships with state authorities and industry contacts
Experience and Technical Skills
  • 4-6 years of relevant professional experience in tax, accounting, information technology (IT) or management information systems (MIS)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel
  • Experience with AKORE, Avalara Returns Excise, IGEN, or similar tax reporting software a plus
  • Experience with ERP and back-office systems common to the fuels industry, such as SAP, Right Angle, JDE, or PDI, a plus
Education Required
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s degree in accounting, information technology (IT) or management information systems (MIS) or a Masters’ degree in accounting
  • CPA, PMP, or other certification encouraged

The base salary range for this role is $100,000–$140,000 at full-time capacity, with individual pay determined by education, experience, and skills. Benefits include medical/dental/vision coverage, 401(k) and profit sharing*, and flexible PTO.

We recognize that full-time doesn't have to mean one-size-fits-all. This role can be structured as reduced full-time with salary scaled accordingly — all levels remain full-time and eligible for our benefits package.
