About

The Role

Herring Bank is seeking a highly technical, self-directed Financial Accounting Senior Accountant to join our Finance team.

This senior individual contributor role is responsible for executing the Bank’s regulatory reporting and consolidation cycle in partnership with the Financial Accounting Manager. The ideal candidate combines strong regulatory knowledge, meticulous attention to detail, and a control-focused mindset.

You will play a hands-on role in preparing the Bank’s Call Report, ensuring data from core systems accurately maps to regulatory requirements, while helping improve and automate existing reporting processes.

What You’ll Do
  • Prepare, validate, and compile the quarterly FFIEC Call Report, periodic holding company FR Y series filings, and other federal and state regulatory filings for management review and submission.
  • Perform monthly and quarterly holding company consolidations, including intercompany eliminations, equity method entries, and preparation of consolidated financial statements.
  • Prepare investment portfolio accounting entries and CECL/allowance entries under the methodology established by the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Provide accounting support related to asset-liability management.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and work papers for federal and state tax returns and serve as a day-to-day liaison with external tax advisors.
  • Maintain deferred tax work papers.
  • Design and maintain tie-out procedures to ensure regulatory schedules reconcile to the general ledger and core banking sub-ledgers.
  • Prepare work papers and respond to external auditor and regulatory examiner requests related to Call Report logic, consolidations, and accounting treatments.
  • Identify manual bottlenecks in reporting and cross-system data aggregation and recommend opportunities for automation.
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of FFIEC Call Report instructions and schedules.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory capital rules and ratios.
  • Ability to independently manage complex, deadline-driven work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical skills and a control-oriented approach to accounting and reporting.
  • A process-improvement mindset with an interest in replacing manual, spreadsheet-heavy processes with scalable solutions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • CPA or eligibility to sit for the CPA exam is a plus.
  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • At least 2–3 years of hands‑on experience preparing bank regulatory filings and consolidations.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, bank accounting guidelines, intercompany transactions, CECL, and regulatory capital rules.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including data modeling, Power Query, and INDEX/MATCH.
  • Experience with core banking systems and regulatory reporting software.
Why Join Herring Bank?

Herring Bank has served its communities since 1899. We are building a disciplined, scalable accounting function where roles are clearly defined, controls are strong by design, and manual processes increasingly give way to automation.

This position offers deep hands‑on involvement in a high‑visibility, mission‑critical function and a clear development path toward full regulatory reporting ownership.
