Controller

Location: SE Portland - On-site with 1 Day Work From Home (WFH) flexibility per week

Compensation: Target Range: $130,000 – $180,000

Industry: Consumer Products / Manufacturing

About the Company

We are working with a rapidly growing consumer products and manufacturing organization dedicated to delivering high-quality products to their customers. They are experiencing high growth and are building a strong, scalable infrastructure to support their expansion.

We are seeking a hands-on, high-caliber Controller to lead their accounting function, strengthen operational discipline, elevate internal controls, and mentor their existing finance team during this exciting phase of growth.

Role Overview

The Controller will serve as a core financial leader, taking full ownership of accounting operations, financial reporting, cost accounting, and systems integration. This is an ideal role for an analytical, curious leader who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves in the details while driving big-picture process improvements.

You will work closely with senior leadership, present quarterly financial results to investors, and help build the foundation for long-term financial stability and growth.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

  • Lead and manage the entire month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statement preparation.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Design, implement, and strengthen internal accounting policies, standard operating procedures, and controls.
  • Present clear financial results, metrics, and actionable strategic insights to senior executive leadership and investors.

Cost & Manufacturing Accounting

  • Oversee cost accounting, inventory accounting, and product costing methodologies across manufacturing operations.
  • Partner closely with plant operations to ensure accurate valuation of inventory, standard costing, and yield variance analysis.
  • Drive data integrity improvements across ERP integrations and core operational workflows.

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Lead cash flow forecasting, budgeting processes, and financial analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Partner with operational leaders across the organization to evaluate product performance, control costs, and drive efficiency.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage, mentor, and develop existing accounting staff to foster professional growth and operational discipline.
  • Provide strong leadership, structured guidance, and clear accountability to build a high-performing finance team.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

  • Proven hands-on ownership of month-end closes, complex reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Cost accounting and manufacturing accounting experience within inventory-heavy environments.
  • Hands-on ERP experience (Net Suite strongly preferred, or comparable modern ERP system).
  • Proven team leadership, mentorship capability, and process improvement track record.
  • Advanced Excel capabilities (pivot tables, complex modeling, linked workbooks, financial functions).

Industry Experience

  • Experience in Food & Beverage Manufacturing, Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), General Manufacturing, or Retail Products with complex inventory structures.

Ideal Mindset & Approach

  • Collaborative and curious: takes time to understand the nuances of the business before introducing operational changes.
  • Detail-oriented and tactical: willing to roll up their sleeves and handle granular work when necessary.
  • Adaptable and strategic: capable of implementing stronger controls without creating operational disruption.

Key Benefits & Why Join Us

  • High-Impact Leadership: Direct influence over systems, internal controls, and financial infrastructure during a period of scale.
  • Investor Exposure: Gain valuable executive-level experience presenting quarterly financial results directly to investors.
  • Succession Opportunity: Positioned as a key candidate for long-term finance leadership as the company expands.
