Robert Joseph Group is recruiting a hands‑on Controller for a newly created, fully remote position for our Washington, DC-based nonprofit client.
Own the accounting for a nonprofit’s sponsored project portfolio
Reporting to the CFO, you will lead day‑to‑day accounting for the organization and more than 20 sponsored projects. This role combines close ownership, payroll and cost allocations, audit coordination, and practical systems improvements. You will supervise the Accounts Payable Manager and work alongside managers responsible for revenue and grants, financial systems, and contracts.
What you will do- Lead month‑end close, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, financial reporting, and general ledger accuracy.
- Oversee biweekly payroll, timekeeping, payroll journal entries, and 401(k) reconciliations; ensure employee costs are allocated correctly across 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, projects, grants, and activities.
- Coordinate the annual financial statement audit and provide schedules and financial support for Form 990 preparation.
- Manage the Accounts Payable Manager, strengthen internal controls, and keep payments and finance requests moving on schedule.
- Partner with revenue and grants colleagues on revenue recognition, receivables, restricted funding, and project reporting.
- Use Sage Intacct and collaborate with systems specialists to reconcile data between platforms, test changes, and improve accounting processes.
- Give project leaders clear, timely answers to financial questions and follow issues through to resolution.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field and at least five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including oversight of accounting operations.
- Hands‑on Sage Intacct experience, ownership of month‑end close and reconciliations, payroll processing experience, and accounting staff supervision.
- Strong general ledger and internal control knowledge, clear communication, and the ability to resolve discrepancies while managing competing deadlines.
Nonprofit accounting, fiscal sponsorship, multi-entity allocations, audit coordination, and Form 990 experience are preferred. CPA or CPA candidate status is a plus. Familiarity with Paylocity, BILL, Ramp, or Quickbase is highly preferred
