Position Summary
- Administrative Operations:
General understanding of office management systems, working knowledge of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and university policies regarding student data and confidentiality. - Student Development:
Familiarity with the challenges faced by students from equity-seeking backgrounds and the best practices for supporting student retention and success. - Project & Event Coordination:
Proven ability to manage complex logistics, including room bookings, catering, and guest speaker travel for large-scale program events. - Digital Communication:
Proficiency in managing multi-channel communications, such as newsletters, website updates, and social media platforms. - Advanced Software Proficiency:
High level of skill in Microsoft Office 365 (particularly Excel spreadsheets for data tracking and Teams for collaboration). - Multi-Tasking & Prioritization:
Ability to remain composed and efficient in a "living learning" environment that experiences high foot traffic and frequent interruptions. - Problem-Solving:
Ability to identify operational bottlenecks (e.g., room capacity issues or scheduling conflicts) and implement proactive solutions.
- Position Type: Part-time (0.5 FTE).
Knowledge normally acquired through a high school education with course work in word processing, typing, shorthand, and grammar; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in maintaining account ledgers, administrative, office management, word processing, editing, composing correspondence, taking dictation, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and/or presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
DesiredQualifications
5+ years of experience within a Michigan State University academic unit preferably the Charles Drew Science Scholars program or a similar student-success initiative possessing a functional mastery of university administrative systems. Preferred candidates will demonstrate a proven track record of supporting diverse student populations and the ability to navigate the unique logistical landscape of a residential living-learning program.
