AboutThe Role
We are seeking a Data Processing Clerk II – Team Lead to perform data processing and quality control support for the Division of Field Studies and Engineering (DFSE) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The role involves entering, coding, validating, and correcting occupational health and surveillance data using government-provided instructions, established classification standards, and NIOSH systems (including NIOCCS).
This role leads day-to-day coding/data entry activities for assigned projects, supports quality control (QC) and records management processes, and serves as a point of contact for staff questions while coordinating with the NIOSH project leader to ensure work is completed accurately, consistently, and on schedule.
This is a hybrid remote position based in Cincinnati, Ohio that will require onsite work at the customer’s location at least 3 days per week. Telework must be approved by customer. Must be available between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday. This position is contingent upon contract award.
Responsibilities- Enter occupational health and exposure study data in accordance with project-specific coding guides and data entry instructions, including verbatim entry and minor coding as directed.
- Review and interpret source documents that may include PDF files or microform copies of hardcopy records (e.g., employment records, surveys completed by hand) to ensure accurate data capture.
- Enter data into custom data entry applications such as Microsoft Access in the NIOSH Industry and Occupation Computerized Coding System (NIOCCS).
- Validate and correct study and surveillance data based on edit reports; implement corrective actions per written instructions and/or direction from the project leader.
- Apply national classification standards to assign codes, including Census/NAICS/SOC industry and occupation codes and Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Statistics’ Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System (OIICS) cause-of-injury/illness codes for workers’ compensation claims, as required by the project.
- Perform first-level QC to ensure accurate interpretation of industry and occupation narratives and identify records requiring additional review (including higher-risk or flagged narratives).
- Conduct administrative or final-level QC checks of industry and occupation codes; update codes based on coding rules and established standards.
- Support study data collection by contacting data providers (e.g., medical record requests), following up on outstanding survey responses, scanning hardcopy files, distributing/collecting surveys, preparing mass mailing materials, and tracking response/form status.
- Maintain study records and associated data per branch procedures; provide access to records in usable formats; ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with applicable regulations/policies; maintain paper and electronic records per agency-specific rules.
- Coordinate with the project leader to orient staff to project requirements, address questions and concerns, and promote consistent application of coding and data entry instructions throughout project execution.
- Participate in industry and occupation coding trainings specified by the NIOSH project leader; assist with training activities as assigned; provide training to Data Processing Clerk I and Data Processing Clerk II staff.
- Assist with system testing and IT team consultations as needed; support NIOCCS testing; complete National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS) and other project consistency reviews and computer-generated coding reviews.
