Tenn Care compensation is equitable and will be based on education and experience for a qualified candidate in accordance with Department of Human Resources (DOHR) policy.

The Division of Tenn Care is dedicated to providing our employees with a hybrid work environment. All Tenn Care positions combine work from home and work in the office, with the balance varying by position, department, and business need. This role will require in‑office presence at least once per week, with additional occasional meetings as scheduled by supervisors.

Job Overview

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) advises and supports all Tenn Care departments on legal, strategic, regulatory, and compliance matters that advance its mission. The Request for Release (RFR) team seeks a Legal Assistant to support the accurate and timely processing of RFR cases within OGC. This role will serve as a key member of the RFR team, working closely with attorneys and internal stakeholders to ensure cases are processed efficiently, documentation is maintained accurately, and sensitive information is handled in accordance with established procedures.

The Legal Assistant will play an essential role in maintaining workflow continuity, supporting case‑related communications, and contributing to overall operational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enter and maintain RFR case data within required time frames, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all information and documentation.
  • Verify critical data (e.g., Social Security numbers) and flag discrepancies for review.
  • Process case data and prepare, review, and distribute correspondence, including notice‑of‑claim letters.
  • Access and update claim records to ensure accuracy of claims periods and case details.
  • Verify recipient and mailing information to protect confidential data and prevent errors.
  • Create and maintain internal tracking tools, including RFR and death certificate referral spreadsheets.
  • Organize and maintain case files and supporting documentation for efficient retrieval.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing mail, scan documents, and respond to and log voicemail communications.
  • Attend meetings as scheduled by supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant studies.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant studies.
  • Paralegal Certificate.
  • One year (28 semester hours) of graduate‑level law school.
  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school combined with two years of full‑time experience in researching legal issues, documenting findings, and assisting in the building of case files.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Ability to maintain strong professional and interpersonal relationships while managing multiple priorities and adapting to changing needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing demands, handle matters efficiently and proactively, and follow projects through to completion within established deadlines.
  • Detail oriented with strong organization, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Strong computer data entry skills, including knowledge of proper punctuation and proofreading abilities.
  • Effective written communication skills, including drafting letters, emails, and reports on behalf of the office staff.
  • Experience working with large‑scale eligibility, enrollment, or case management systems similar to Tenn Care systems.
  • Experience in the healthcare field.
