Job Description & How to Apply Below
Join a dynamic, statewide leadership team supporting the Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension (IANRE). This key role provides high-level coordination and executive support for a mission-driven institute serving 100+ faculty and staff across Alaska. Operating with significant autonomy, you will manage the Director's office administrative infrastructure, ensuring operational excellence across diverse research and extension programming.

The Role

This position requires high-level administrative experience and the ability to learn and navigate complex university policies and procedures. You will be a trusted advisor to leadership, working closely with the directors, faculty, and staff to ensure the Institute's operations run smoothly.

The day-to-day duties of this position are dynamic and may include scheduling and maintaining calendars for two directors and 11 offices across the state, coordinating with administrative assistants to ensure that facilities at remote offices run efficiently, and monitoring and supporting administrative processes to ensure they align with Institute goals and UA policies and procedures.

Acting as a central point of support, the role helps ensure faculty have the guidance, resources, and administrative assistance needed to navigate university systems and requirements effectively. By collaborating closely with IANRE leadership, HR, faculty affairs, and UA offices, this position promotes clear communication, policy compliance, and adherence to university procedures and collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), while fostering a responsive and supportive environment for faculty.

The Ideal Candidate

We seek a proactive professional who excels in navigating complex university environments. Our ideal candidate possesses:

* Strong Management Skills

* High-Level Coordination

* Exceptional Communication

* Strategic Thinking

The Assistant to the Director serves as the critical operational anchor for the Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension (IANRE) at the University of Alaska - Fairbanks (UAF). At IANRE, we work to enrich the lives of Alaskans by bringing UAF research and expertise directly to citizens, helping families grow food, supporting farmers in crop production and empowering everyday Alaskans to live healthier lives.

This position functions at the intersection of executive administration, faculty governance, and statewide operations, providing high-level support to the Director's Office while ensuring the seamless execution of the faculty lifecycle. Based in Fairbanks, the role oversees a complex portfolio that includes compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), the management of faculty reporting and evaluation processes and the leadership of administrative workflows across more than 100 personnel statewide.

As a key representative of the Director's Office, the Assistant to the Director bridges the gap between institute-level strategy and university-wide policy to ensure operational excellence in service of our mission.

You are a strategic problem-solver who enjoys navigating the nuances of university policy and faculty governance. You should possess a high degree of emotional intelligence and professional tact, as you will often manage sensitive personnel matters and act as a primary liaison between faculty, leadership and various university departments. Success in this position requires the ability to balance technical accuracy, such as reviewing workloads and reporting requirements, with the big-picture leadership needed to coordinate a statewide team.

We are looking for an individual who is remarkably self-directed, thrives in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and organizational excellence.
