Join Our Team as a Substitute Adult Services Assistant!

Why You’ll Love This Role

As a Substitute Adult Services Assistant, you are the face of our adult department when regular staff are away. You will help patrons navigate our physical and digital collections, assist with exciting community programs, and ensure the library remains a welcoming space for everyone.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patron Support:
    Staff the Reference Desk, answer basic research questions in person, via phone, or email, and guide patrons in using library equipment, computers, scanners, and digital databases.
  • Collection Care:
    Help maintain our collection by shelving materials, shelf‑reading for accuracy, and suggesting new titles or identifying items for weeding.
  • Programming & Outreach:
    Assist in planning, promoting, and conducting engaging adult programs (in‑person, virtual, or hybrid) and create eye‑catching monthly book displays.
  • Community Engagement:
    Provide excellent readers’ advisory to help patrons find their next great read, and promote library services both inside the building and out in the community.
What We Are Looking For

Reliability and flexibility are key for this role! We need someone who is ready to step in, arrive on time, and bring positive energy to our team.

Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing for extended periods, lifting up to 20 lbs, bending to the floor, reaching overhead, and pushing heavy book carts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least one (1) year of direct experience working in a library, bookstore, or educational setting.
  • Familiarity with KOHA or other Library system.
  • A strong pulse on current events, technology, popular culture, and modern library trends.
  • Schedule:

    On‑call / as‑needed basis to cover staff absences, vacations, and peak periods. This includes evenings and weekends depending on library needs.
  • Environment:
    Primarily on‑site in a vibrant public library setting, with occasional opportunities for remote work or off‑site community events.
  • This position is entitled to earned sick leave per N.J.S.A. 34:11D-1.
