The Position

Are you prepared to use your legal clerical knowledge and leadership strengths to guide a team and support important decisions within a fast-paced appeals environment? The Legal Assistant Supervisor position with the Department of Human Services, Bureau of Hearings and Appeals offers an opportunity to lead staff who help keep the appeals process accurate and timely. You will help shape daily operations, support administrative law judges, and promote consistency across the region.

Description Of Work

This position oversees the clerical and legal support work that helps process statewide appeals in a timely and accurate manner. The role ensures that staff follow procedures, maintain required records, and support administrative law judges in carrying out appeal activities. As a Legal Assistant Supervisor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Staff Supervision: Train, guide, and review the work of legal assistants and clerical staff to support efficient operations
  • Appeal Oversight: Monitor incoming appeals, track deadlines, and ensure cases are scheduled and processed according to regulations
  • Case Management: Manage records, documents, and statistics through the electronic case database to support accurate appeal handling
  • Legal Document Review: Oversee the preparation and proofreading of scheduling orders, subpoenas, notices, and other materials
  • Confidentiality Protection: Ensure staff follow rules that prevent improper communication and protect sensitive information
  • Policy Coordination: Assist with implementing procedures, updating practices, and communicating changes to staff and partners

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Overtime:
    As needed
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time upon successful completion of your training and probationary periods, subject to individual eligibility and the Bureau's operational needs. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

    The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Legal Assistant 2 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Five years of responsible clerical, investigative or enforcement work including two years of legal clerical experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
