Introduction
The Tax Appeals Commission (TAC) is looking for administrative support staff. Our ideal candidate enjoys helping others, finds satisfaction in getting details right, and works well independently. Our office is small; this position is one of two that are entirely on‑site. A major modernization is planned for 2027‑2029, and you will play a key role in that transition.
The Commission Clerk/Legal Secretary provides confidential administrative and advanced secretarial services for the legal staff of the Tax Appeals Commission. The role includes serving as Commission Clerk, office manager, intake coordinator, receptionist, and scheduler. Responsibilities include initial intake of appeal petitions, telephone contact, arranging teleconferences and hearings, drafting standard Commission correspondence, and preparing legal notices. The position supports Commissioners by processing mail, attending to logistical details of teleconferences, hearings, and trials, working with the Chair on budget matters, coordinating travel and expenses, and tracking caseload statistics.
SalaryInformation
The hourly rate will be $24.61 per hour. This classification is assigned to pay schedule/range 02‑12 and is non‑exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). A 12‑month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job DetailsDue to the nature of the position, TAC will conduct background checks on applicants prior to selection. TAC does not sponsor work visas and is not an eligible OPT (Optional Practical Training) employer for F‑1 international students. All persons hired must verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required employment eligibility form. This position is onsite and not open to remote work.
The headquarters are located at 101 E Wilson Street, Madison, WI.
- Planning, organizing, scheduling, and coordinating schedules and documents with tight timelines using computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or similar)
- Customer service via multi‑line telephone and email
- Managing the flow of documents in and out of the office (e.g., correspondence management, filing, etc.)
- Office management such as expense reports, paying invoices, ordering supplies, working within a budget, or similar
