The Community Development Department is hiring an Administrative Assistant to join our team. Our mission is to facilitate sustainable development in Juneau.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FORWe are seeking an individual with strong proofreading and editing skills, which can be demonstrated through work experience, education, writing samples, or assessment results. While this is an entry-level position, it is also well-suited for someone re-entering the professional workforce after a career break.
KnowledgeProficiency in computer functions such as word processing, spreadsheets, and email is essential. Experience working with software programs such as Govern or Tyler Tech is desired but can be learned on the job as needed.
SkillsExcellent proofreading skills and strong attention to detail, proficiency in touch typing is required. Effective communication and collaboration with coworkers are essential to ensure tasks are completed efficiently. Candidates should possess strong time and task management skills, ensuring productivity and the ability to meet deadlines.
AbilitiesAbility to multi-task and prioritize, especially in the face of frequent interruptions, is key. Must maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with customers, both internal and external. Ability to comprehend and fulfill legal, departmental, and other requirements.

- This position works a 37.5-hour week, with flexibility to meet scheduling needs or requests, and is eligible for telework and remote work scheduling options after one year, subject to supervisor approval.
- The office is in the Marine View Building in downtown Juneau, near City Hall (paid, covered, parking is provided).
This position works Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with weeknight evening hours twice a month to support the Planning Commission (typically the second and fourth Tuesday each month). The Administrative Assistant (AA) provides administrative support for the Community Development Department (CDD) of the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ). This is an entry level position, working under the direction of the department Director, as part of a team with the Administrative Officer and Administrative Coordinator. The position is the primary support staff for the Planning Commission, responsible for public notices, editing and proofreading legal documents, staff reports, and agendas, creating meeting packets, and other tasks related to cases.
The AA assists with the development and implementation of workflows and procedures related to the permitting system. The AA assists the staff in the day-to-day activities of CDD and regularly interacts with the City Clerk’s Office and other CBJ departments. Routine duties may include writing and responding to emails, answering phones, managing office supplies, and providing excellent customer service both internally and externally.
The AA uses and maintains multiple calendars to arrange and track meetings and deadlines. This position requires a great deal of desk and computer work, including reading and reviewing documents, typing, and data entry. The AA delivers, retrieves, and distributes department mail and other items daily. The AA occasionally runs errands, shops for supplies, and performs additional duties as assigned.
Education:
High School graduation or the equivalent.
Experience:
Six (6) months of clerical experience. This work is equivalent to an Office Assistant with the City & Borough of Juneau or equivalent elsewhere.
SUBSTITUTION:
Post-secondary or vocational training may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of: three (3) semester or four (4) quarter hours of post-secondary education are equal to one month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education are equal to one month of experience.)
Other: A valid Drivers’ license at time of appointment and for continued employment.
