The Senior Manager, Strategic Sourcing & Procurement manages and oversees Car Max's strategic sourcing projects and develops programs using industry best practices, sourcing methodologies, tools, and techniques. This role partners with category leaders, business owners, suppliers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver products and services that provide maximum value to Car Max.
The incumbent leads complex sourcing projects from planning through supplier selection, contracting, implementation, and performance tracking. The role develops sourcing strategies, evaluates supplier responses, negotiates business terms, communicates recommendations clearly, and helps ensure stakeholder expectations are met throughout the sourcing lifecycle.
This role will often work across categories supporting complex Car Max initiatives with significant opportunity to make meaningful impact.
What you will do - Essential Responsibilities- Identify sourcing objectives and strategies, supplier selection criteria, project timelines, briefing materials, and communication plans and develop the appropriate sourcing approach, including spot buys, RFIs, RFPs, RFQs, negotiations, and supply alternatives based on business requirements, benchmarks, industry best practices and project complexity.
- Conduct category and market analysis, including industry trends, economics, purchasing patterns, forecasts, and market conditions for assigned categories and projects.
- Leverage current and future tooling and continuous improvement efforts (ex: Claude, MS Co-Pilot) for optimization of the sourcing and procurement process.
- Partner with business owners and management to develop clear, concise business requirements and project scope.
- Manage supplier communications, evaluate responses, and present finalists and recommendations in clear side-by-side comparisons, own key communications to suppliers.
- Negotiate business terms, service levels, deliverables, and success criteria while collaborating with Legal, Technology, IT Security, Internal Audit, Accounting, and business stakeholders to align contracts with business needs.
- Identify, assess, analyze, and communicate the impact of sourcing projects, including cost savings, cost avoidance, quality improvement, and other value opportunities against baselines and budgets.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders and suppliers to develop success criteria, establish KPIs and SLAs, support effective implementation, and monitor performance for critical and strategic suppliers.
- Procurement and/or strategic sourcing experience, typically 8+ years experience across multiple categories is preferred.
- Strong project leadership skills with 5+ years relevant project management experience; ability to manage highly complex initiatives that span categories.
- Proven contract negotiation skills; strong communication skills with the ability to influence others using data and facts.
- Strong customer service, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated bias for action and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency with financial concepts (including ROI analysis) and demonstrated experience performing detailed analyses of complex data, business situations, and supplier complexity. Ability to understand and analyze trends, forecasts, and what-if scenarios and apply sound business reasoning
- Ability to establish working relationships with associates at all levels of the company.
- College degree or equivalent business or relevant procurement experience.
- Experience with Microsoft products and working with large, complex datasets.
This role will be based out of the Car Max Home Office in Richmond, VA and Associates will work onsite 4 days per week.
