)
The Hartford’s Risk Services organization seeks a virtual Risk Engineering Consultant to conduct low to mid‑size risk assessments, partner with customers, underwriters and distribution partners, and support profitable growth. The position is 100% remote, with up to 10% overnight travel required.
This role is open to candidates at various levels depending on background and experience.
Responsibilities- Strategic Risk Advisory & Consulting
- Act as a strategic risk advisor, partnering with clients to proactively identify emerging risks and co‑create value‑added mitigation solutions.
- Tailor recommendations to each client’s industry, risk profile and business priorities.
- Risk Assessment & Service Execution
- Conduct risk assessments and consultations across relevant lines of insurance using virtual/digital delivery models.
- Develop and execute data‑driven service plans targeting loss drivers, operational exposures and client business objectives.
- Communication & Influence
- Translate complex technical findings into clear, compelling insights for clients, agents and underwriting partners.
- Use storytelling with data to influence underwriting decisions and customer actions.
- Digital Enablement & Innovation
- Leverage digital tools, analytics and emerging technologies (dashboards, virtual tools, AI‑enabled insights) to enhance service quality, efficiency and customer experience.
- Contribute to a culture of innovation, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
- Collaboration & Growth Enablement
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with underwriting, claims, sales, data and technical experts to deliver integrated risk solutions.
- Identify opportunities to expand Risk Services offerings and support profitable growth.
- Learning & Talent Development
- Engage in continuous learning to stay current on industry trends, emerging risks and evolving technologies.
- Mentor, coach and support less experienced engineers as appropriate for the role level.
- 3+ years progressive experience in risk engineering, safety, loss control or related consulting roles.
- Strong ability to assess risk, interpret loss data, identify trends and develop targeted mitigation strategies.
- Comfort with digital tools, analytics and technology‑enabled platforms for risk engineering services.
- Customer‑centric mindset with the ability to understand client priorities and tailor solutions accordingly.
- Proactive consultation skills, anticipating client needs and influencing adoption of recommendations.
- Storytelling with data – translating technical findings into meaningful business insights.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and delivery of client‑facing presentations.
- Digital fluency and a willingness to learn and adopt new tools, platforms and AI‑enabled capabilities.
- Commitment to continuous learning and technical expertise expansion.
- Extensive knowledge of NFPA Standards, FM Global Data Sheets and other industry standards preferred.
- Professional safety or risk management certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH, ARM, CPCU, CHST) preferred or required based on role level.
Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) strongly preferred in Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, Environmental Health or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
CompensationThe base pay range for this role is $102,400 – $153,600 per year, plus additional rewards such as short‑term or annual bonuses, long‑term incentives and on‑the‑spot recognition. Actual base pay may vary based on performance, proficiency and demonstrated competencies.
