Data Analysis Internship Gulf Associates Johannesburg, Gauteng, ZA
We are looking for a Data Analysis Intern to support our commercial advisory team. This is a full-time, fully remote role that focuses on providing direct decision support to senior decision makers. Unlike standard consultancy roles that focus on abstract theory, this position is centered on commercial judgment and ground reality. We are currently supporting a major infrastructure development and logistics project in a growing regional market.
Your work will involve organizing the data that allows our partners to give clear, actionable advice to chief executives and sovereign entities regarding these complex investments.
- Organize and clean raw datasets collected from various commercial and public sources to ensure our models are based on verified facts.
- Assist in building and maintaining financial models that track competitor behavior and logistical costs within the territory.
- Conduct targeted research on counter parties to understand their current market positions and potential future moves.
- Draft clear summaries of data findings that help the team prepare positions for client negotiations.
- Identify patterns in trade flows and investment data to support scenario work for major capital deployment decisions.
- Support the preparation of reports that focus on the commercial logic of a deal rather than just theoretical projections.
- Audit third party reports to find inconsistencies or gaps in the data provided by other market participants.
- Collaborate with senior partners to update project trackers and ensure all data remains current and relevant to the engagement.
- A strong grasp of Excel and the ability to manage large sets of data without losing sight of the overall commercial goal.
- A logical mind that enjoys breaking down complex problems into manageable data points.
- High attention to detail, especially when checking your own work for accuracy and consistency.
- The ability to write in a direct and professional manner, avoiding unnecessary corporate jargon.
- An interest in how market logic works, specifically in environments where state capital and private entities overlap.
- A quantitative mindset that prioritizes hard evidence over assumptions or general market sentiment.
- A disciplined approach to remote work, with the ability to manage your time effectively and stay communicative with the team.
- A humble and curious attitude toward learning how high stakes commercial decisions are actually made.
- A paid internship with a competitive rate that is attractive for both the role and the current market.
- The flexibility of a fully remote work arrangement, allowing you to contribute from wherever you are best located.
- Direct exposure to senior partners and the chance to see how commercial negotiations are handled at the highest levels.
- The opportunity to work on substantial projects where your analysis has a direct impact on the final outcome.
- A working culture that values honest feedback and values results over the number of hours spent at a desk.
Working at Gulf Associates means stepping away from the standard corporate playbook. We are a specialized firm that values directness and commercial judgment. We do not produce reports just for the sake of output: we produce positions that our clients can use to make real decisions. Our culture is one of accountability and transparency. Because our partners stay involved in every engagement from start to finish, you will be part of a team where your input is reviewed by people who are actually in the room for the negotiations.
We maintain a small book of active projects so that we can focus on quality and depth. This is a professional environment where performance is measured by the clarity of our advice and the success of the results that follow. We value coworkers who are grounded, detail oriented, and more interested in the reality of a deal than the polish of a presentation.
