Description

Commence, headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA, is a mission-led, technology-driven company built to solve the hardest problems in federal health care and drive measurable outcomes. Its work spans program integrity and compliance, quality improvement and measurement science, health informatics, interoperability, and AI, delivered across the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Defense Health Agency (DHA), and state health agencies.

At its center is a data-centric philosophy grounded in a simple conviction: that better data, made accessible, connected, and usable, is the raw material of better decisions, better care, and better efficiency.

Requirements

The Business Development Intern supports Commence’s federal growth team by helping identify, research, and track opportunities aligned with Commence’s agency targets and strategic plans. This is a temporary, learning-focused role designed for a student or recent graduate who wants hands-on exposure to federal contracting, capture support, and business development operations within a government healthcare technology company. The intern works under the direct guidance of the Business Development Analyst and Growth leadership.

  • Assist in researching and tracking federal contracting opportunities using Gov Win, SAM.gov, FPDS, USA Spending, GSA eBuy, and other government intelligence sources, under supervision.
  • Help maintain and update opportunity records in the Salesforce CRM pipeline, ensuring accurate and timely data entry as directed by the BD team.
  • Support monitoring of agency procurement forecasts, budget justifications, and RFI/sources-sought notices, and flag items of interest for the team’s review.
  • Assist with compiling competitive intelligence and background research on potential teaming partners, subcontractors, and agency priorities.
  • Help prepare briefing materials, opportunity summaries, and pipeline status reports for leadership reviews.
  • Support proposal development tasks such as reviewing solicitation checklists, formatting documents, updating resumes and past-performance write-ups, and organizing compliance matrices.
  • Help organize and maintain the opportunity tracking database, boilerplate/content repository, and staff qualifications library.
  • Take notes and follow up on action items from BD team meetings and, where appropriate, industry events or webinars.
  • Complete assigned research projects and short-term deliverables that build foundational knowledge of the federal procurement lifecycle.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing, or recently completed, a bachelor’s degree in Business, Political Science, Public Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
  • Genuine interest in federal contracting, government healthcare programs, or business development as a career path.
  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills with close attention to detail.
  • Comfortable learning new software platforms and databases; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
  • Ability to manage multiple short-term tasks, meet deadlines, and ask questions when priorities are unclear.
  • Ability to commit to the internship’s required schedule (hours and duration to be confirmed with the hiring manager).
