Otero College Child Development Services provides comprehensive services, including full-day early childhood education, for children and their families through home-based and center-based services located throughout southern Colorado. It is the mission of Otero College Child Development Services to provide high quality, comprehensive early childhood education programs for children from birth to compulsory school age; to provide parent education programs that strengthen the family, develop basic literacy, encourage job training and personal development;

and to develop community partnerships and coordination of community-based services.

Job Summary:

To aide bus driver in ensuring children are provided with a safe, comfortable environment getting on and off the bus and throughout the duration of the bus ride and to provide support and assistance to the classroom teacher in achieving program objectives and goals.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • 1. Adhere to Otero College Child Development Services policies and procedures.
  • 2. Comply with Head Start Performance Standards and State of Colorado Rules and Regulations for Child Care Centers.
  • 3. Support and implement the mission and goals of Otero College Child Development Services.
  • 4. Encourage and support family engagement in all aspects of the Head Start program.
  • 5. Participate in all required in-service training and applicable workshops.
  • 6. Work as part of a team providing a welcoming environment for families and visitors.
  • 7. Be an effective problem solver.
  • 8. Report and document any suspected child abuse and neglect in compliance with Colorado law and agency policies and procedures.
  • 9. Understand and implement Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Act, and Child Policies and Procedures as they apply to program management and supervision.
  • 10. Assist the driver in case of emergency and participate in emergency evacuation practices once a month.
  • 11. Knowledgeable regarding program policies and safety procedures.
  • 12. Assist in identifying indications of ill child and bring to the attention to the Teacher.
  • 13. Take direction from teachers and implement classroom duties.
  • 14. Assist in implementing individualized curriculum to meet the needs of each child.
  • 15. Ensure that health, nutrition and safety education are properly taught and practiced.
  • 16. Share mealtime experiences with child to make it a learning and social experience and not let food be used for punishment or reward.
  • 17. Perform classroom janitorial duties as necessary.
  • 18. Assist in keeping daily records on attendance and meals.
  • 19. Actively participate in activities with children at their level.
  • 20. Organize classroom areas and prepare classroom materials as requested by teacher.
  • 21. Comfort crying children and be responsible for teaching simple songs and finger plays while on the bus.
  • 22. Oversee safety of children and engage in age-appropriate interactions with children while on the bus, in the classroom and in outdoor environment.
  • 23. Properly put children in and out of the correct child restraint system on the bus.
  • 24. Deliver messages between the parents and the school.
  • 25. Responsible for transporting children’s medication and returning it home in the evenings.
  • 26. Follow emergency plans and procedures.
  • 27. Follow procedures for releasing children.
  • 28. Communicate efficiently with teacher.
  • 29. Educate children and parents in transportation/pedestrian safety.
  • 30. Check bus after each route to ensure no child is left on board.
  • 31. Other program related duties assigned by supervisory personnel and/or Executive Director.
Competencies/KSAs:
  • Ability to handle responsibility for children on the bus and in classroom and to request assistance and guidance through appropriate channels.
  • Able to lift children up to 50 lbs.
  • Be computer literate with knowledge for Microsoft office programs as it pertains to your position.
  • Be eligible to work in a childcare setting.
  • Have valid First Aid and Infant/Child CPR card and keep current or obtain within 30 days of employment if applicable to position.
  • Positive role model for children; language, dress, and behavior must be appropriate to a childcare setting.
  • Be able to establish an atmosphere of trust and respect with HS families, children and staff.
