This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy building positive relationships, facilitating learning through play and structured activities, and contributing to a safe, nurturing classroom environment.

As an Assistant Teacher, you will work closely with Lead Teachers to implement age-appropriate lessons, encourage development across social, emotional, physical, and cognitive domains, and support daily routines that foster belonging and curiosity. You will gain hands‑on experience in classroom management, child observation, and family communication while engaging in meaningful work that strengthens children, families, and communities.

What You'll Do

Support the delivery of high-quality childcare and educational programs aligned with YMCA standards. Encourage children's development through intentional, positive interactions and engaging activities. Assist with planning and implementing age-appropriate lessons and learning experiences. Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and welcoming classroom and outdoor environment. Build trusting relationships with children, families, and fellow staff members. Maintain compliance with YMCA policies, licensing requirements, and Step Up to Quality standards.

Assist with meal and snack planning in accordance with CACFP guidelines. Help maintain organized, clean and engaging classroom spaces. Communicate observations, concerns, and developmental progress with Lead Teachers and families. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities offered by the YMCA.

What We're Looking For

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children and/or in a customer service environment. Must be at least 18 years of age. Strong understanding of child development and age-appropriate interactions. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. Ability to work effectively with children, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Basic computer proficiency and willingness to complete required documentation.

Current First Aid, CPR, Child Abuse Prevention, and Communicable Disease certifications, or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Why Join the YMCA?

At the YMCA, you join a mission-driven organization committed to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We provide a supportive team environment, ongoing training and opportunities for career advancement. Benefits include competitive starting pay, a free individual YMCA membership, professional development, and a $300 sign-on bonus paid after 30, 60, and 90 days of successful employment. If you seek meaningful work that helps create a positive foundation for the next generation, we encourage you to apply.

Physical Requirements

Ability to actively engage with children throughout the day, including standing, walking, and sitting on the floor. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and respond quickly during emergency situations. Maintain professionalism, composure, and positivity in a fast-paced childcare environment. Dependable attendance and strong teamwork skills.

Join the YMCA and help create a positive foundation for the next generation.
