This position will be based in our Mid City, Los Angeles office. Hybrid or remote work is also okay.
10-15 hours per week
Pay rate: $25/hour
As an assistant, you will have the opportunity to work closely with seasoned publicist and KFLA founder Kim Dower (40+ years in business) to gain hands‑on book industry experience as you complete day‑to‑day tasks, review manuscripts, pitch authors, book interviews, maintain client schedules, help with special projects, and run occasional local errands for office supplies and book mailings.
Who you are- Self-starter with an interest in book publishing, some prior publicity experience, and strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Preferably have an MA in publicity, marketing, book publishing or related field
- Must be results-driven and take appropriate steps to achieve goals while taking ownership of situations as needed
- Enthusiastic and excited about discussing recent books you’ve read
- Ability to work closely and collaboratively with the publicist and contribute honest insights
- Possess a great attitude and desire to learn, as well as excellent organizational skills
- Resourceful with the ability to balance multiple responsibilities and work independently when needed
- Interest in or eagerness to learn about the current media landscape, book publicity, and other related activities
- Proficient in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and Canva
- Conduct research on relevant media and news outlets (print, electronic, radio) and bookstore speaking engagements
- Maintain and update company databases, author folders and schedules, tour bookings, and contact sheets to ensure accurate and up-to-date records
- Potentially lead small social media publicity campaigns with a focus on book influencers across Instagram and Tik Tok, researching and pitching popular accounts using comp titles and market analysis
- Mail ARCs and finished print books to media reps, influencers, and reviewers
- Review client manuscripts to write author interview questions and press release copy, and to find fresh pitching angles for various markets
- Draft and design press releases and pitch letters using engaging, creative language, and title data for efficient and authentic outreach
- Assist in pitching and booking detailed schedules for all client press activities
- Collaborate with the publicist to accomplish various client and office projects
