Overview

The University of Arizona's Steward Observatory invites you to apply for the role of Graphic Artist. This position will provide support in the preparation and standardization of project presentations, documents, and associated materials such as conference posters, proposals, and publication submissions. The role also involves ensuring all program documents follow defined formatting and content requirements, sponsor directives, and proper document control procedures.

Creation of custom graphics, figures, and illustrations for project materials is also part of the function of the role. Experience working with large teams and the ability to interact with individuals of varying experience levels is required.

Candidates working anywhere in the U.S. may be considered for a remote assignment. If you are selected for this position and are employed to work remotely from outside of Arizona, your overtime‑exemption status will depend on the laws of the state where you perform your work. For employees working outside of Arizona, you may be hired as an hourly employee in accordance with state laws.

A comparable hourly rate range would be: $28.56 – $35.70. These changes would not affect the position duties as outlined.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with team members in different roles, including program managers, the principal investigator, engineers (senior and early career), and academic researchers (students, postdocs, and professors) to ensure their presentations and documentation align with program and sponsor standards.
  • Prepare and format technical program materials, including presentations and written documents in Word, PowerPoint, LaTeX, establish standards and templates for various document types, and support staff in developing materials.
  • Work with strict standards, providing guidance on the desired format and appearance of materials for reviews and public‑facing presentations such as conferences.
  • Verify that program materials are compliant with proper document‑control procedures, ensure consistency with labeling and version control, and update version‑control documentation as necessary. This includes readability, uniformity of appearance, and accessibility for those without extensive technical backgrounds.
  • Apply design fundamentals to create and edit custom figures, images, and illustrations as needed for program materials.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with document creation in PowerPoint, Word, LaTeX, and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Experience with version‑control platforms such as Git Hub.
  • Experience creating presentations and reports for space missions or other large‑scale, multi‑year efforts.
  • Experience working with teams across multiple projects.
