Position Title

WUNC – News is hiring an intern for our Youth Reporting Institute. This is a paid position with flexible hours, up to 16 hours per week, at $18 per hour. The internship will begin in mid-August 2026 and run through the end of the year (approximately 6 months). The role is primarily in‑person, with possibilities for hybrid/remote work, and a computer will be provided.

Summary

The intern will be on the front line of covering important races in the 2026 mid‑term election, ranging from U.S. Senate to key local elections. Responsibilities include producing radio and digital reports of various lengths while covering campaign events, reporting on election management and voting issues, learning to research political funding databases, and producing “voter voices” style stories. The intern will also participate in skills workshops with other WUNC Youth Reporting Interns and is expected to take part in a showcase event in early December.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the WUNC News Politics team.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience related to broadcast television, radio, or emerging media.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, proficiency with spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style.
  • Understanding of journalistic practices, ethics, and public media core values.
  • Journalism and radio experience preferred.
Compensation and Work Schedule

Hourly wage of $18.00. Up to 16 hours per week with flexible hours. The internship begins on August 17, 2026 and lasts up to 6 months.
