Opportunity
The Telegram is seeking a multimedia journalist to join our team in St. John’s, NL. Your main focus will be covering news stories across Newfoundland and Labrador, with a focus on political and health reporting. You will identify and explore issues that are important to the people of our province, explaining the problem and seeking potential solutions. The ideal candidate is skilled at writing features as well as web reporting on immediate issues, able to story- tell and write articles that condense information for online readers.
Driven by the demands of speed and online readership growth, the multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments, generate ideas to attract and retain readers returning to daily. A strong understanding of newsletters, SEO and best practices for web is considered a bonus, as is familiarity with platforms like Word Press, but support and training will be provided. The candidate is a team player, willing to work with colleagues on investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently in a work-from-home role.
The candidate must be able to cover events in person as needed within St. John’s. The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical to the position, as is working closely with the managing editor and assistant news editor. The position is a unionized job, working with a remote newsroom, beginning as soon as possible.
What you’ll do
Tell the stories of people in Newfoundland and Labrador, with an emphasis on political and health reporting.
Report and write stories for our website, and tailor content to meet the varying needs of our platforms.
Use social media to find sources, story ideas and topics of interest to the community each day and explain why these topics are important to NL.
Leveraging strong phone skills, as you may be reporting from a distance.
Apply knowledge and experience filing access to information requests.
Respond quickly to stories that are important to our readers, turning around pieces that help grow online readership by providing context, analysis and explanations.
Initiate and develop ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
Cultivate sources and establish expertise to break stories.
Work with digital teams to create other multimedia elements.
Qualifications
Experience at a news organization in a deadline-oriented reporting/writing role.
Fluency in digital platforms, multimedia journalism and social media.
Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions.
Ability to work constructively as part of a newsroom team.
Compensation
Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location. This is a unionized position subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement. The starting salary listed in this job posting is based on the Year 1 rate outlined in the collective agreement. Offers will be made based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
