Senior Lighting Artist

Location:

Remote within British Columbia or at the Vancouver studio in Gastown (Downtown). Remote work is not available outside BC and a hybrid option is not offered. Project start early March 2026, projected to end mid‑April 2026.
Company  Zoic Studios is a visual effects company specializing in high‑end VFX for television, film, and advertising. The studio is artist‑owned and operates with a focus on visual evolution and an emphasis on both creative and technical excellence.
Position Summary  The Senior Lighting Artist is responsible for lighting and rendering the most complex, photorealistic elements necessary to complete the visual effects work on a feature animated film. The role requires an eye for photographic nuance, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a deadline‑driven environment. The Senior Lighting Artist will also help identify, develop, and document workflows, tools, and best practices.
Responsibilities   Engage in sequence and shot‑level lighting looks in collaboration with key creative personnel.
Translate practical lighting setups from a sound stage to a CG environment using available survey data to create rendered images that meet creative vision and technical standards.
Take ownership of look development for shots and sequences, working with artists across disciplines.
Incorporate characters, digital objects, set extensions, and environmental effects into scenes.
Provide technical guidance for quality control of other artists’ work as needed.
Support design, development, and delivery of visually creative and technically sound solutions for shots and sequences.
Guide the efforts of other lighting artists working on shots and sequences.
Identify areas of industry innovation and develop/customize tools, templates, scripts, workflows, and documentation, including productivity improvements.
Collaborate in training and mentoring new hires as needed.
Meet productivity and quota targets in accordance with schedule and milestones.
Qualifications   5+ years of experience lighting high‑end photoreal VFX for feature films or television.
Robust knowledge of lighting principles, tools, and workflows.

Experience with Katana (required).
Working knowledge of Nuke, compositing principles, and Maya, Houdini, and Render Man.
Advanced technique experience:
Global Illumination, HDRI, subsurface scattering, real‑world lighting set‑ups.
Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision under tight turnarounds in a multi‑tasking environment.
Strong communication skills with diverse artistic talents and one‑on‑one interactions.
Excellent time management, proactive problem solving, and respect for deadlines.
Basic coding skills in Python or Lua (preferred).
Compensation and Additional Information  British Columbia Employees Pay Range: $45,000–$65,000 annually. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the qualifications of the applicant, years of relevant experience, educational level, certifications or professional licenses, and the position’s location. Zoic does not cover relocation costs. All work‑from‑home positions require a reliable internet connection via Ethernet and are scheduled during Pacific Standard Time.
