Position Purpose

The Social Content and Community Specialist creates content for and engages with audiences on Dartmouth’s flagship social media channels. Reporting to the Director of Social Strategy and Digital Engagement, this role combines hands‑on content production (~60%) with community management and social listening (~40%).

The Specialist writes, designs, and produces static and written content for Dartmouth’s institutional accounts, manages day‑to‑day community engagement across platforms, and serves as the team’s eyes and ears on online conversations. Day‑to‑day editorial direction comes from the Associate Director of Social Media.

This is a creative, audience‑facing role for someone fluent in the rhythms of social media, who writes well and wants to help shape how a major institution shows up on platforms where its audiences spend their time.

Required Qualifications – Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 2 or more years of relevant experience (or equivalent).

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience producing content for social media platforms, with a portfolio that reflects strong writing and visual sensibility.
  • Strong copywriting skills, including the ability to write in a defined institutional voice across platforms with different tones and conventions.
  • Working knowledge of design tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, or Figma sufficient to produce graphics, carousels, and Stories.
  • Experience managing community engagement on social platforms, including responding to comments, direct messages, and mentions.
  • Familiarity with social listening tools and approaches, and the ability to identify trends, sentiment shifts, and emerging issues.
  • Sound judgment in determining what to elevate, what to respond to, and how to represent an institutional voice in public‑facing interactions.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to take ownership of small tasks that add up to a polished public presence.
  • Familiarity with social media management platforms such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or similar.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit communications, or a comparably mission‑driven organization.
  • Experience collaborating with photographers, videographers, or designers to package content for social.
  • Familiarity with reporting on social media performance and using analytics to inform content choices.
Key Accountabilities Content Production (60%)
  • Creates static and written content for flagship channels, including post copy, carousels, graphics, Stories, and thread‑based content.
  • Sources and produces visual assets in collaboration with MPG videographers, designers, and campus photographers; occasionally captures photo and video content for time‑sensitive moments where dedicated support is not available.
  • Contributes to content calendar planning and editorial brainstorms.
  • Supports campaign execution and high‑profile institutional moments as needed – sometimes beyond normal working hours.
Community Engagement and Social Listening (40%)
  • Manages community engagement across platforms by responding to comments, direct messages, and mentions in Dartmouth’s institutional voice.
  • Monitors social platforms daily for community sentiment, student voices, trending topics, and real‑time moments.
