Pay Range

Pay Range $1,483.20-$1,596.50 per credit hour

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach BDJ 312 Audio and Digital News Writing, Reporting and Producing during the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits).

The open section meets Tuesdays 12:30-2:30 and Thursdays 12:30-3:30pm .

Course

Description:

This course is the students’ first class devoted to reporting and it uses audio as its principal technology. The class includes field experiences, and students produce a weekly radio newscast in our production laboratories. Additionally, students learn to write web stories and use social media to report. Professors are also expected in this class to give substantive and timely feedback so that students can apply that in the next assignment/ production.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Previous college/university teaching experience is a plus.
  • The successful candidate must have significant experience as a working broadcast journalist.
  • Applicants should specifically discuss their news writing and news reporting experience and capabilities.
  • The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate they are current on the rapid changes occurring in newsroom, use of new media in news, and that they are thoughtful about future directions.
Responsibilities

It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

  • Developing a syllabus.
  • Ordering books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes in advance.
  • Preparing for classes.
  • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
  • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
Tools/Equipment
  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
