Social Media Comedy Writer - Remote/freelance

This is a Contracted position in the field of Sales / Marketing / Advertising / PR / Social Media , located in New York, NY .

The employer is Hall & Mirrors
.

New York City-based production company Hall & Mirrors is looking for a creative comedy writer who specializes in short form content (30 seconds to 2 minute clips) with a strong understanding of humor, character, tone, and short-form storytelling to help develop original scripts for social media advertisements. We’re specifically looking for someone who can recognize patterns in everyday life, conversations, relationships, workplace dynamics, and culture to turn those observations into funny, engaging concepts.

A background in improv, sketch comedy, screenwriting, or comedy writing is valued highly for this role.

The work will initially involve writing approximately 5–10 short-form scripts per week, primarily for 1–2 minute social media videos. You’ll work from creative briefs, brand guidelines, existing characters, and general concepts, then develop them into scripts that feel entertaining first while naturally incorporating the brand or product.

Because we work with different brands, versatility is important. You should be comfortable learning an established voice and writing within it rather than applying the same comedic style to every project. One script might call for dry, understated humor while another might be much more over the top and quirky.

This is a paid freelance opportunity. This role is remote, but a base in the NYC metro area would be ideal. We’re looking to bring someone on relatively quickly and will likely begin with a paid writing test or initial batch of scripts to see if the candidate is a good fit for this work.

Pay is subject to your preferred rate structure and current freelance rate. Hourly, per-script, or project-based rates will be discussed.

When applying, please include the following in your cover letter:

  • A link to your writing portfolio, website, or relevant work
  • 2–3 examples of comedy, sketch, scripted social content, or other character-driven writing you’ve worked on
  • A brief explanation of your role in those projects
  • Any relevant improv, sketch, comedy, or performance experience
  • Your availability and typical turnaround time
  • Your hourly, per-script, or project rate
Experience
  • Writing approximately 5–10 original short-form scripts per week to start
  • Developing scripts designed for 1–2 minute social media videos
  • Turning creative briefs and loose concepts into fully developed comedic scripts
  • Identifying relatable patterns, behaviors, and observations that can become entertaining concepts
  • Writing natural, comedic dialogue that feels believable when performed
  • Understanding existing characters and maintaining a consistent voice across recurring content
  • Adapting your writing style to match different brands, audiences, and tones
  • Finding ways to organically incorporate a product or brand without making the content feel overly promotional
  • Developing strong openings and concepts that quickly establish the premise and grasp attention
  • Responding to notes and revising scripts efficiently
  • Experience in comedy writing, improv, sketch comedy, screenwriting, or another form of character-driven writing
  • Strong sense of what makes short-form content engaging on platforms such as Instagram Reels, Tik Tok, and You Tube Shorts
  • Strong understanding of comedic timing, structure, dialogue, and character
  • Ability to write convincingly in different voices and tones
  • Comfortable receiving a loose concept or creative brief and building it into a completed script
  • Able to write within an established creative world while still bringing original ideas to the table
  • Comfortable receiving feedback and making revisions
  • Organized, communicative, and able to meet weekly deadlines
  • Experience writing branded or social content is a plus
  • Experience performing, directing, or participating in improv/sketch is a plus
