The salary range for this position is $21.10 hourly.

Thurston County Public Works is seeking a reliable and customer-focused temporary Scalehouse Operator to join our dynamic Solid Waste team. In this temporary position, you will assist customers and collect fees at our Thurston County Solid Waste facilities located in Lacey, Rainier, and Rochester.

This temporary position may work part‑time up to 40 hours per week, including weekends, and is anticipated to last six (6) months from the hire date.

Essential Functions
  • Measures loads of refuse for cubic yardage to determine cost; determines categories for loads.
  • Collects fees explaining the rate structure and issues receipts.
  • Answers phone calls from the public for information on dumping.
  • Logs daily and weekly receipt sheets and deposits cash receipts weekly.
  • Performs custodial maintenance of facilities daily.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • Work Environment – The work is performed at a transfer station and will be done outside, inside, and in a small kiosk. Exposure to a variety of weather conditions is present.
  • Schedule – Hours will vary based on operational needs and may range from part-time to full-time, including weekends and holidays.
  • Travel Requirements – Travel to other Solid Waste sites will be required.
  • Customer Interactions – Daily interactions in person with the public and Thurston County staff.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year work experience requiring public contact and cashiering duties.
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License.
Desired Skills
  • Ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Previous cash handling experience.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with co‑workers and the public; ability to take oral and written instructions, adaptable to changing work conditions/tasks, and at times work independently.
