Senior Product Designer

About The Role

The core mission of this role is to design, prototype, and launch groundbreaking AI-powered features and products for Planet’s geospatial analysis tools. This senior product designer will own the user experience for the Geospatial Analysis AI assistant, shaping how users interact with Earth Observation data through conversational, insight-driven interfaces.

• Lead the end-to-end design process (research, conceptualization, wire framing, prototyping, user testing, high‑fidelity visual design) for Geospatial AI interfaces.
• Design intuitive and powerful Large Language Model (LLM) interfaces that translate complex user questions into actionable geospatial queries and clear, summarized insights, with a focus on explainability.
• Identify opportunities to integrate AI/ML models into Planet’s platform, translating technical capabilities into compelling, human‑centered product features.
• Collaborate closely with AI researchers, data scientists, product managers, and software engineers to ensure technical feasibility and design excellence.
• Champion disruptive innovation by moving beyond traditional map‑based tools to conversational, insight‑driven experiences.
• Gather user feedback and conduct interviews to inform design decisions.
• Architect the interaction model for Planet’s AI‑native interface.
• Partner with product management and engineering teams to ensure design meets the highest quality standards.
• Contribute to building Planet’s design culture.

• 10+ years of professional experience designing complex digital products, especially bringing new products to market.
• Bachelor’s degree in design or an equivalent field.
• Expertise in designing for technical, SaaS, or B2B products, collaborating closely with product and engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
• Experience working with Figma/Adobe and design systems.
• A design portfolio demonstrating professional projects and the impact of your work.
• Experience conducting usability testing and lightweight user research, synthesizing findings into actionable design improvements.
• End‑to‑end design experience: from early ideation to live software, iterating on feedback.
• Ability to overcome design roadblocks and challenges.
• Standard industry design skillset in:
  • UX/UI Design
  • Interaction Design and rapid prototyping
  • Usability and accessibility
  • Visual design principles
  • User‑centricity

• Previous experience with GIS, geospatial data, and/or remote sensing.
• AI‑native mindset and experience using AI tools for creative ideation and design/code generation.
• Experience developing speculative or future‑state products, interactions, and concept models.
• Demonstrated problem‑solving and ownership of complex design challenges.
• Experience working on growth‑focused teams.
• Strong empathy for both end users and stakeholders.

San Francisco Salary Range: $205,800—$257,200 USD.
