Principal Planner
We are seeking a highly motivated professional to join Team Gilbert as Principal Planner. The role reports to the Planning Manager and focuses on providing best‑in‑class service to citizens while supporting professional growth in an innovative work environment.
Responsibilities- Actively participate in and prepare organizational, departmental, and workgroup goals and objectives.
- Supervise staff: prioritize and assign work, conduct performance evaluations, ensure staff training, enforce policies and procedures, maintain a safe working environment, and make hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
- Manage and coordinate project/plan review activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and standards.
- Provide information, technical assistance, and interpretation regarding complex planning issues, land development, construction document reviews, plan reviews, codes, regulatory compliance, design guidelines, development standards, permitted uses, project reviews, procedures, and related matters.
- Review department staff reports and presentations.
- Write staff reports including analysis, recommendations, conditions of approval, ordinances, and resolutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, urban design, land use planning, landscape, geography, public administration, architecture, environmental design, or related field.
- Master’s degree desired but not required.
- Minimum eight years of experience in municipal planning, public or private sector.
- Three years of interdisciplinary complex project management experience.
- AICP certification preferred.
This position works four 10‑hour days, Monday through Thursday. Hybrid or remote work schedule may be considered. This is an at‑will position and is FLSA exempt, ineligible for overtime compensation.
