Architectural Job Captain
This role combines the responsibilities of an Architectural Project Manager, Project Architect, and Designer, with a focus on multi-family, mixed-use, commercial, and NYCHA projects. You will lead the production of construction documents, coordinate project teams, and manage client relationships while contributing to the renovation, restoration, and rehabilitation of large-scale residential and affordable housing projects, as well as charter schools and other building types.
The position offers a hybrid work schedule and the opportunity to work on award-winning, impactful projects across New York State and New York City.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage architectural projects, including multi-family, mixed-use, commercial, NYCHA, and housing projects across New York State and New York City.
- Produce detailed construction drawings and specifications for the renovation, restoration, and rehabilitation of large multifamily and affordable housing portfolios, including thousands of apartments throughout the New York City region.
- Prepare, coordinate, and manage multiple filings and drawing sets for large preservation and rehabilitation projects distributed across the New York Metro Area.
- Use Revit and AutoCAD to design, detail, and draft architectural plans, elevations, sections, and details in accordance with building codes and project requirements.
- Apply excellent knowledge of building codes, particularly for multi-family and mixed-use projects, to ensure code compliance in all project documentation.
- Oversee and coordinate a team of junior architects and consultants, providing guidance, direction, and quality control throughout all project phases.
- Manage client relationships by serving as a primary point of contact, communicating project progress, and ensuring deliverables meet agreed timelines and expectations.
- Conduct site visits to evaluate existing conditions, take field measurements, and capture site photographs, using this information to develop accurate as-built drawings and design solutions.
- Identify and implement practical, constructible solutions to field conditions and unforeseen site issues, working closely with contractors and consultants as needed.
- Contribute to design development for historic preservation and rehabilitation projects, ensuring that design intent aligns with preservation standards and project goals.
- Participate in construction administration activities as needed, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and supporting the project team during construction.
- Collaborate with colleagues in an open, modern office environment while also working independently to meet deadlines and project milestones.
- Travel to project sites within the New York City area and broader New York State as required to support project documentation and coordination.
Essential
Skills:
- Bachelor's Degree in Architecture.
- Minimum of 3+ years of architectural experience, preferably with multi-family projects in New York State and New York City.
- Strong proficiency in Revit for architectural design, modeling, and construction documentation.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting and production of construction documents.
- Excellent knowledge of building codes, particularly for multi-family, mixed-use, and commercial projects.
- Demonstrated experience with multi-family projects, including affordable housing and large residential portfolios.
- Experience with NYCHA projects or similar public housing and rehabilitation work.
- Hands-on experience in construction document preparation and construction documentation.
- Project management experience, including coordinating teams, managing schedules, and delivering projects on time.
- Ability to manage multiple filings and drawing sets for large preservation and rehabilitation projects.
- Experience with historic preservation and rehabilitation projects.
- Ability to visit job sites and develop practical solutions to field conditions.
- Strong design development skills, including the ability to design, detail, and draft plans.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and maintain strong client relationships.
- Independent, self-starting work style with the ability to hit the ground running and work with minimal supervision.
Additional Skills &
Qualifications:
- Licensed Architect status is a strong plus.
- Experience with renovation and restoration of existing buildings, particularly in an urban context.
- Experience documenting existing conditions, including field measurements and site photography.
- Background in affordable housing, mixed-use developments, and charter school projects.
- Familiarity with construction administration processes and coordination with contractors and consultants.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.
- Comfort working in a hybrid environment that combines in-office collaboration with remote work.
