Position: Architectural Historian I

Position

Summary

McCormick Taylor has an immediate opening for an Architectural Historian I in our Cultural Resources Department. The position will support architectural history and historic preservation projects, including background research, field documentation, historic resource survey forms, and technical report preparation. The ideal candidate will be able to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, work effectively in a collaborative team environment, and adapt to a hybrid office/remote work setting.

Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational skills are required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide support to mid- and senior‑level architectural history and cultural resources staff.
  • Assist with field surveys to document buildings, structures, districts, sites, and objects for evaluation under the National Register of Historic Places criteria.
  • Conduct archival, background, and property‑specific research to support property histories, historic contexts, and technical reports.
  • Take digital photographs during fieldwork in accordance with project and agency documentation standards.
  • Prepare or assist with the completion of standardized historic resource survey forms and related documentation.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports, resource evaluations, and supporting materials.
  • Work effectively as part of a project team and communicate clearly with supervisors and other staff.
  • Complete assigned tasks within established schedules and budgets.
Qualifications
  • 0–2 years of relevant professional, internship, or academic experience in architectural history, historic preservation, history, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of historic preservation laws, regulations, and review processes, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with Access or other databases is helpful.
  • Ability to travel for site visits, fieldwork, and project meetings, as needed.
  • General understanding of GIS and how it is used for mapping project areas, historic resources, and survey data; hands‑on GIS experience is helpful but not required.
