Position: Pathologist (VETERINARIAN 3)

Job Summary

The Comparative Pathology Laboratory (CPL) is seeking applicants for a part-time anatomic pathologist position with expertise in laboratory animal diagnostic and experimental pathology. The staff pathologist will provide pathology support for clients of the CPL as well as provide oversight and mentorship for the CPL residency and student training programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution.
  • Completion of a residency in veterinary anatomic pathology.
  • At least 3 year's experience working in a laboratory animal diagnostic and/or experimental pathology environment.
  • Must be familiar with standard veterinary and diagnostic instrumentation currently used in USA.
  • Skills and ability in gross and histopathologic interpretation for diagnostic and research purposes.
  • Skills and ability to organize and maintain accurate case records and reports that can be used as teaching material.
  • Knowledge and skills in laboratory animal pathology methodology and special diagnostic procedures related to the detection and diagnosis of disease in laboratory animals.
  • Familiarity with teaching techniques, including didactic lectures, case-based learning, and interactive digital pathology tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Comparative pathology or similar discipline
  • Knowledge and abilities to perform specific procedures and interpretations related to mouse phenotyping, safety and toxicity assessments and semi-quantitative scoring.
  • Skills and abilities

    in study design and scientific publication.
  • Knowledge and abilities to perform digital slide analysis.

Department Overview

The Comparative Pathology Laboratory is a veterinary medical diagnostic laboratory at the University of California, Davis with a $2.4 million annual budget. CPL partners with the UC system and external research community to provide specialized pathology and clinical laboratory services critical for animal-based studies.

Department Specific Job Scope

The part-time pathologist will provide veterinary pathology expertise to support diagnostic and research pathology services, ensuring high-quality evaluations for a diverse range of laboratory species. In addition to diagnostic responsibilities, the pathologist will oversee and enhance CPL's teaching program, mentoring residents, interns, and externs, conduct pathology rounds, and develop educational resources to advance training in comparative and research pathology.
