Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States – or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training:
    Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Assigned residency paths: (1) Approved by ACGME or AOA in the year completed; (2) One year of post‑medical school training followed by two years of independent practice in the United States; (3) Non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
  • Residents in current ACGME/AOA programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, and have a scope of practice that allows them to perform restricted duties under supervision.
  • Physicians with surgery residencies in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may request reasonable exceptions to residency requirements for physicians whose records warrant such action.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine.

    Preferred experience:

    previous experience in geriatrics. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard.
  • Physical requirements:

    Must meet physical standards for the position; a physical examination prior to placement is required; this is a designated drug‑testing position; random testing for illegal drug use will occur after appointment; must be able to lift 15–44 pounds; push, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands; walk and stand for 3–5 hours and kneel; rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously;

    depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of color; hearing aid permitted.
Responsibilities
  • Provide primary health care and consult with nursing and medical staff for patients with complex treatment or care needs in the home.
  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members to deliver quality care and patient education, participate in research activities, and assist patients in acute and chronic rehabilitation techniques.
  • Perform assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and outcome measurement of healthcare issues.
  • Follow up with additional home visits as appropriate.
  • Provide Home‑Based Primary Care (HBPC) services in the Central California Health Care System and in client residences.
  • Major duties include – but are not limited to:
    • Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome measurement of healthcare issues.
    • Provide medical care to patients with acute and chronic health problems.
    • Provide preventive medical care including screening and vaccinations.
    • Follow up with additional home visits as appropriate.
    • Collaborate with nursing personnel in patient care.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
