Position Summary

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo (UB), in collaboration with Golisano Children’s Hospital (GCH) at Buffalo, is seeking a dedicated and academically oriented physician for a full-time faculty position. This unique hybrid role includes 75% effort in Pediatric Palliative Care and 25% effort in Pediatric Critical Care.

This is an academic faculty position at the Assistant, or Associate level, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments. The ideal candidate will be board certified in pediatrics and board certified/board eligible in both Pediatric Palliative Care and Critical Care Medicine. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to compassionate, family-centered care and have strong communication skills and be able to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams.

Clinical

Responsibilities Pediatric Palliative Care (0.75 FTE)
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient pediatric palliative care consultations for children with complex, chronic, and/or life-limiting conditions.
  • Deliver expert management of pain and non-pain symptoms, including dyspnea, nausea, agitation, and fatigue.
  • Lead family-centered communication, including goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning, and shared decision-making.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds with nursing, social work, child life, chaplaincy, and the primary medical and surgical teams and subspecialists.
  • Support care transitions across inpatient, outpatient, home-based, and hospice settings.
  • Contribute to program development, quality improvement, and implementation of evidence-based palliative care practices.
  • Participate in palliative care call coverage.
  • Support community pediatricians as they care for children with complex, chronic, and/or life-limiting conditions.
Pediatric Intensive Care (0.25 FTE)
  • Provide direct clinical care in the PICU at GCH at Buffalo, caring for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Provide critical care consultation to the inpatient units at GCH and the emergency room.
  • Serve as medical control for critically ill inter-hospital transports as needed.
  • Perform procedures consistent with critical care training and credentialing (airway management, vascular access, point-of-care ultrasound).
  • Lead multidisciplinary rounds and collaborate with subspecialists and surgical teams.
  • Integrate palliative care principles into PICU practice, including early identification of patients who may benefit from supportive care.
  • Provision of conscious and deep sedation as part of a pediatric sedation service as assigned.
  • Participate in PICU in-house call weekday and weekend responsibilities as assigned.
  • Engage in PICU quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Academic Responsibilities
  • Teach medical students, pediatric residents, and fellows in both palliative care and critical care settings.
  • Participate in scholarly activities such as clinical research, quality improvement, program evaluation, or curriculum development.
  • Present at departmental conferences, grand rounds, and educational workshops.
  • Contribute to academic service and committee work aligned with departmental and school missions.
  • Receive mentorship to support academic advancement and career development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree.
  • Board certified in Pediatrics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Board eligible/board certified in Pediatric Critical Care and Palliative Care.
