Job Summary

The Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute (MHSSI) consists of two residential summer programs sponsored by the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) and Michigan Medicine Health Advancement:

  • Undergraduate Research Academy (URA):Provides 20 undergraduate students and/or recent graduates with research experience alongside Michigan Medicine faculty.
  • Career Development Academy (CDA):Provides 20 undergraduate students and/or recent graduates with an MCAT preparation course and resources to support their medical school application process.

The Health Advancement MHSSI staff team is under the supervision and leadership of the Pre-Medical Pathways Program Manager and MHSSI Administrative Project Coordinator, with roles ranging from 10 to 40 hours per week. The team of nine includes the MHSSI Program Assistant, four Medical Student Tutors and four Community/Residential Advisors, two of whom also serve as Student Research Mentors.

Hourly Wage

  • $21 at 40 hours per week
  • $22 at 40 hours per week for Student Research Mentor responsibilities

The employment details for MHSSI roles are as follows:

30 hours per week

May 4 to July 29 (12 weeks)

Medical Student Tutor (4)

10 hours per week

May 27 to July 27 (8 weeks)

Community Advisor (2)

40 hours per week

May 11 to July 29 (11 weeks)

Community Advisor and Student Research Mentor (2)

40 hours per week

May 11 to July 29 (11 weeks)

Responsibilities*

Serve as a residential advisor living in the residence halls alongside the 40 CDA/URA participants and peer Community/Residential Advisors.

Uphold U-M and Michigan Medicine policies ensuring compliance with Michigan Housing policies, community standards and reporting procedures.

Collaborate with the Pre-Medical Pathways Program Manager and the MHSSI Program Assistant to support the success of 2026 CDA/URA Summer Programming.

Attend regular 1:1 meeting with the Program Manager and weekly team meetings with MHSSI Staff

Serve as a lead mentor to a group of 10 CDA/URA program participants

Assist with the organization, setup, implementation, and cleanup of CDA/URA programs and events, and support the execution of key events (e.g., Move-In/Move-Out, Welcome Dinner, Friday Socials, URA Research Symposium, Closing Dinner/Ceremony).

Student Research Mentors will provide meaningful feedback to URA students on their research project progress, including poster and oral presentations.

Perform additional administrative tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications *
  • Current undergraduate student or recent pre-medical/pre-health graduate
  • Live in the residential halls with the program participants (single room)
  • Ability to appropriately respond to crisis situations and medical emergencies.
  • Student Research Mentors must have faculty-mentored research experience, including oral and poster presentations.

Availability

  • Must be available virtually from May 11-22.
  • Must be available in person from May 26-July 29.
Desired Qualifications*
  • Residential Advisor or Supervisory experience preferred
  • Previously enrolled in the Michigan Health Sciences Summer Institute (CDA or URA) preferred
Work Schedule

M-F 9-5p, with some weekend hours
