Overview

Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is seeking mentors for its Summer Research and Experiential learning Opportunities (SRELO) program for students in grades 11-12. This research program will introduce students across the state to the process of conducting scientific research including designing a research question, a literature review, gathering data, analyzing data, and writing conclusions. Students will be required to create a culminating research presentation.

This is a temporary, non-exempt position. The selected candidate will be required to work on IMSA’s Aurora campus for two weeks over the summer with another two weeks of one-on-one or small group remote work. On campus work will be 40 hours/week and while remote work will vary by the number of enrolled students for a cohort of up to 20 students.

This position will begin in June of 2026.

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable Accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This individual will be responsible for:

  • Developing a short-term research project(s) for up to 20 students that can result in generation of presentable data.
  • Guiding and mentoring a group of high school students through a unique research project
  • Mentoring students through data collection and analysis
  • Safely using lab or soft to engage students in lab-based or computer-based
  • An appreciation and understanding of working with diverse populations
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in STEM with scientific research experience.
  • Broad content background in science
  • Deep understanding of how to effectively communicate with students on novel science concepts
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS AND

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work will be performed on site and remotely.

Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This role generally requires, written and verbal communication, and hearing and visual capabilities. However, reasonable accommodations, including assistive technology, may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform such requirements.

COMPENSATION:

This position is a temporary, non-exempt, employment-at-will position. Compensation is $46.00/hr for work performed in FY26 and $48.00/hr for work performed in FY27. This position is not benefits eligible.
