Pay Range

Pay Range $1,400 - $1,800 per credit hour

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description

Teach one course each of ENG 304 Writing Poetry 3 credits and ENG 401 Advanced Writing Workshop Poetry for 3 credit hours in the Spring 2026 semester in-person on the SU campus. Start date for this position is 1/05/2026, with first day of class being 1/12/2026. The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit-rate-history within the hiring department.

ENG 304

Creative and critical engagement with the practices of reading and writing poetry. Emphasis on both analytical and creative work.

ENG 401

Extensive practice in writing poetry.

All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment. Current internal applicants will receive priority consideration.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • MFA in Creative Writing.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparing lectures, projects of other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the class.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
  • Working with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
  • Submitting completed final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Completing all other course-related duties as outlined by your department’s policies for part-time instructors.
