Position Description

SIT Graduate Institute seeks a full-time Assistant Professor in Sustainability Studies, who will teach and advise on our PhD in Sustainability program as well as the Global Master's degree in Sustainable Development Practice. We seek an interdisciplinary scholar whose research and teaching explore the intersections of environment, society, and policy in pursuit of sustainable and equitable futures. Candidates may specialize in areas such as climate resilience and adaptation, sustainability transitions, water and food systems, socio‑environmental governance, science and technology studies (STS), natural resource management, sustainability sciences, or environmental/land use planning and policy.

The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in quantitative research design, analysis, and data science applications relevant to sustainability studies, and demonstrate the ability to teach quantitative methods and data analysis as part of their regular course load. We welcome applicants employing mixed‑methods and participatory approaches to sustainability research that explore the complex interactions among social, ecological, and technical systems across local and global contexts.

SIT faculty are expected to engage in applied and interdisciplinary scholarship that connects local realities to global systems, often through partnerships with communities, NGOs, and research networks across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the U.S. Our faculty teach both in person and online and must have a command of inclusive active learning strategies in both contexts. SIT programs emphasize experiential, field‑based learning, systems thinking, and intercultural engagement.

SIT faculty must remain current in their areas of expertise and familiar with practices in higher education. They are expected to be active members of the SIT community, giving service to the institution, and acting as thought leaders in institutional initiatives.

SIT strives to be respectful of, and compliant with, local labor and employment laws. When circumstances warrant, the academic director will have a local employment contract through an affiliated local entity or as determined by SIT. The position is full‑time for the entire contract period.

  • Advise master's and PhD students, supervise research projects, and engage in community‑based scholarship aligned with SIT's mission.
  • Contribute to curriculum innovation, integrating social, ecological, technical, and policy dimensions of sustainability into program design.
  • Collaborate with and support various SIT departments on matters of admissions, marketing, assessment, operations, human resources, and student safety and wellbeing.
  • Participate in school governance and service, fostering collaboration across SIT's global network.
