Remote History PhD Expert - AI Trainer ($60-$75 per hour) Mercor

Mercor is collaborating with a leading AI lab on a large‑scale supervised fine‑tuning (SFT) initiative focused on improving historical reasoning, contextual understanding, and long‑form written responses in advanced language models. We’re seeking History PhDs to contribute as independent contractors by creating and refining historically grounded prompts and responses. This project is well‑suited for native English scholars interested in applying academic historical training to frontier AI research on a flexible, project‑based basis.
Key Responsibilities- Author historically accurate prompts spanning global, regional, and thematic history topics
- Review and revise AI‑generated responses for factual correctness, nuance, and historiographic soundness
- Write expert‑level “gold” responses for complex or ambiguous historical questions
- Create controlled prompt variations that test differences in scope, framing, and interpretation
- Evaluate model outputs across varying lengths, styles, and instructional constraints
- Surface edge cases where models struggle with chronology, causality, or historical interpretation
- PhD in History or a closely related field
- Native English speaker
- Demonstrated experience with archival research, historiography, or academic writing
- Strong command of historical methodology and source evaluation
- Excellent written communication and attention to factual precision
- Ability to work independently and make careful, well‑reasoned editorial judgments
- Remote and asynchronous — contributors set their own schedules
- Expected commitment: 10–25 hours per week
- Multi‑month, project‑based engagement with potential extensions
- All work is performed on a freelance basis through the Mercor platform
- $60–$75 per hour for expert contributors
- Paid weekly via Stripe Connect
- Contributors are classified as independent contractors
